Hmm so upshot is geeks kind of sophomoric? Who knew...

I fully expect someone to respond with the "arguing on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics" picture before the night is through.
  • bbluesman · 11 months ago
And what would arguing in the Special Olympics be then? I worked with
special kids for a few summers-they are actually much better behaved and
    more civil than many geeks.

    Hey, good points.

BTW, I just don't know why people thought I was somehow talking about Techmeme when I mentioned FriendFeed (which was at Scoble's prompting BTW). I'll add that my thoughts on FriendFeed's relationship to Techmeme haven't changed much since March '08: http://bit.ly/cP9v

As far as Techmeme sucking, I like Techmeme, but it's not for 99.9% of the world, so for those 99.9% it will probably suck!

    Thanks, Gabe.

On FriendFeed, there's a discussion going on about this post, particularly on the lack of depth on your comments: like you've said, it's not like this is a new position for you. Mentioning TechMeme and its possible problems acts as an easy diversion from actually discussing the points you've made recently and historically.

Funny, when I got online before 9 a.m. when the story was still breaking on Friendfeed this morning the Steve Jobs thing was all over the place. Maybe you're just not following the right people?
  • Mark Trapp · 11 months ago
That's probably true, Robert. I responded to you on FriendFeed, but there's a lot of stuff loaded in that, and I think it goes to the FriendFeed track you've requested. In order to find the right people to follow, you have to potentially sit through a lot of noise, and you can't filter, by content, individual's feeds. There are some people who post really interesting stuff, and also post a hell of a lot of LOLcats. FriendFeed doesn't help with that, either: if you want that person's interesting stuff, you have to accept their noise, as well.

Woohoo! Someone who dislikes the FF LOLcats as much as I do!

You are known by the company you keep. Some of us just have friends who are juvenile and smug in their immaturity. Some are simply trying to get attention and a reaction. Others have nothing better to do with their time. Everyone has their own motivation and an open forum invites egos to call for attention. The power of the hide should help everyone tailor their feed to their own appetite.
